Benefits peels and skins of fruits

Do not throw the shells or skins of fruits: discover what its benefits and nutritional properties both to your health are.

Surely you remember that health campaign that the Spanish Ministry of Health organized and published some years ago under the title 5 a day, in promoting consumption of 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day, as a healthy option when to care for our health and follow a diet as healthy as possible.

And there is no doubt that the benefits of fruits are actually many: are especially rich in vitamins (provitamin A, vitamin C and B vitamins mainly) and minerals (include especially potassium and magnesium), provide a very large amount of fiber, are rich in water and provide antioxidants.

Benefits of fruit rinds

For example, they are especially rich in fiber, highlighting in this case pectin, which is water soluble. They provide an interesting satiating effect, while helping to prevent constipation. On the other hand, its richness in magnesium help maintain good bowel function, whereas its water content help purify our body and eliminate toxins that have accumulated on it.

But what is best taken with peel or skin, or without it? All fruits have edible skins, except some skins that tend to be tougher, as for example is the case of oranges, watermelons or melons, although there are others that simply is not common to eat them, as in the case of bananas or avocado.
What are the shells of fruit?

We can say that the shells are the skin of the fruit. It is the place with which the fruit interacts with light, forming a variety of pigments that absorb different wavelengths of light, such as flavonoids and carotenoids (which, by the way, are very beneficial for our health).

Certain shells, such as is the case of orange, provide phytonutrients and flavonoids in amounts greater than the own orange pulp. Its shell is especially recommended when enjoying a good digestion, thanks especially to its anti-inflammatory properties.

While it is true that eating oranges can happen to cause heartburn in some people, in shell is quite the opposite: it helps to alleviate and reduce discomfort caused by flatulence, diarrhea and general indigestion.

As might be expected, both the orange peel and the lemon are especially rich in natural antioxidants and vitamin C, ideal for enjoying a well-functioning immune system.
They help reduce blood sugar

It is an interesting quality that contributes especially green tomato peel. In fact, different investigations found that consuming green tomato peel as an infusion was very beneficial to lower levels of blood sugar.

This effect is thanks to the presence of a compound known by the name acyl sucrose, which has hypoglycemic action.

This same quality we have not only green tomato peel, but also fruit rinds like blueberries, plums, apples and pears.
